What Type of Sports Bra is Best for Running?

Women runners know all too well about high-impact activities and bounce issues. Especially for women with larger breasts, running with the wrong type of sports bra, or one that doesn’t fit properly, can be extremely uncomfortable and even painful. In addition to being distracted from your training, this undesirable bouncing can, in time, damage breast tissue. Fortunately, there is a solution—the SugarShock sports bra!

A typical support bra that holds breasts up from the bottom isn’t going to stop breast motion, because according to the University of Portsmouth in England, breasts move in all directions. This problem is made worse due to the structure of female breasts. There aren’t any muscles – only fat, glands, ligaments and skin – so any high-impact activity without an effective sports bra to control breast movement stresses breast tissue, causing possible breakdown and pain. SugarShock provides the control you need, using a proprietary design that is completely different from other sports bras. This sports bra works!

The best sports bras for running will have the following features:

  • Proper Fit – If a sports bra is too loose or too tight, it will cause skin irritation. If you continue to wear the bra, you’ll probably develop chafing. Many women buy sports bras that are too small, or they wear two at a time in an effort to control breast movement or bounce. This is especially true for women with large breast sizes.

  • SugarShock sports bra sizes are based on standard U.S. measurements, which are XS (30), S (32), M (34) and L (36). However, we add more length to the front panel for greater surface area. This gives runners better coverage and a more comfortable fit.

  • Comfortable Shoulder Straps That Don’t Need Adjustment – The problem with adjustable shoulder straps is that the hardware can cause friction against your skin, possibly leading to blistering. Friction is the enemy. Having hardware or thick velcro-type straps is more likely to cause blistering, hot spots, and chafing. This causes pain, and pain is distracting. In fact, anything that rests against your skin that isn’t smooth will distract you while you’re trying to concentrate on your run. The shoulder straps should be loose enough so that they don’t dig into your skin, but tight enough not to slip off as you’re running. If the shoulder straps are too loose or overly flexible, the weight of your breasts may cause them to stretch more, causing even more bounce. Fortunately, SugarShock’s shoulder straps are made to have just the right snugness, and as a continuous part of the sports bra design, they’re perfectly smooth.

  • Snug, Wide and Smooth Rib Cage Band – If the rib cage band material is too tight, it could restrict breathing. But it must be tight enough to stay in place and not ride up as you run. The SugarShock sports bra has a rib cage band that’s 2 inches wide – wider than most, for greater comfort. It’s going to stay in place throughout a high-impact run, even when you get sweaty.

  • Breathable, Moisture Wicking Fabric – The best sports bras for running are made with a breathable, sweat-wicking fabric. Lyra® (more commonly known as Spandex) is the most widely used material in popular athletic wear, as it’s known to be durable, moisture-wicking and breathable. This is the type of fabric we use in our SugarShock bras. In addition to its wicking properties, it’s also very comfortable and flexible, to match your movements.

SugarShock: The World’s Best Running Bra

With its many advantages and advanced design, SugarShock bras truly are the best bras for running.  Their amazing features and smooth, sleek profile make them perfect for everything from light jogs to long-distance marathons. SugarShock is an essential piece of sports equipment that will enhance your performance.

Made from Moisture-Wicking Material – When you sweat, that moisture is moved away from the body, and it quickly evaporates, which keeps you dry and cool as you run. Other materials, such as cotton, hold onto sweat, making clothes feel heavy, clammy and uncomfortable. Sweat-wicking material, the type we use in our SugarShock bras, is very breathable – it lets moisture out and air in. This also makes our bra fast-drying.

Patented Design – Our innovative running bra is specially built to stop breast bounce. It uses patented Shock Band technology, which goes over the top of the breast to hold breast weight down and steady. This shock band captures the upward breast energy and disperses it around the body. Think of it as a shock absorber for your breasts! The SugarShock sports bra is engineered to reduce motion, allowing you to focus on your athletic performance.

Stylish and Smooth; Super Comfortable – Without any unnecessary underwire structure, zippers or adjustable straps, the SugarShock bra gives you a smooth and wonderfully comfortable fit. There’s nothing to irritate your skin or distract you from your run, but just optimal, discreet control to stop the jiggle. Not to mention, you’ll look and feel great! It’s the best of both worlds — fashion and function.

Extra Coverage for a Better Fit – At SugarSports, we’ve thought of everything to provide you with the ideal running bra. This includes added material in the front for a more comfortable fit, greater coverage and to accommodate women with a larger cup size.

Optional Back Pocket for Valuables – Not sure where to put your key on a run? Our SugarShock white and pink bras come with a handy back pocket that can be used to store your keys, phone and gels. Having stuff on your back allows easy access without any added bulk on your body (like an armband or fanny pack) that can be distracting and slow you down.

How Does the SugarShock Sports Bra Work to Eliminate Bounce?

Most support bras use one of three approaches in their design — compression, encapsulation or adjustment. A compression sports bra squeezes breasts into the body to make them flatter, but this has no effect on breast motion during running, which is due to their weight and mass. Encapsulation uses separate compartments or cups for each breast, and this also does not work to control bounce. Adjustable straps won’t help and will likely cause discomfort. SugarShock sport bras use a revolutionary shock band that acts as a shock absorber to absorb and displace motion that’s created by breast weight.

How Do You Stop a Bra from Chafing While Running?

The reason sports bras chafe your skin is because of breast weight that moves up and down. When breast weight moves up and down with a poor-fitting bra, either too loose or too tight, it causes friction and starts to rub. This can be difficult to fix. Trying to adjust something that isn’t right from the beginning will likely not work. Adding additional material to smooth over a rough surface will only create more bulk and a greater chance for something to rub against your skin. If there are adjustable straps, chances are that the hardware, however minimal, may also cause discomfort and chafing. It’s better to switch to our innovative SugarShock bra, which is designed for optimal comfort, no chafing and zero bounce!

How to Tell if a Sports Bra Fits

You’ll know how to tell if a sports bra fits once you start running. Even a light jog will be very telling. Do you feel any rubbing against your skin? Does the rib cage band keep riding up, or do the shoulder straps either dig into your skin or slip off? Do you have breast pain or bounce? These are all indications of a poorly fitting sports bra. SugarShock bras, in addition to providing significantly reduced breast motion and zero bounce, is sized perfectly for running and other high-impact sports. It also provides relief for large-breasted women, as it includes extra material for greater coverage and a more secure fit.

Discovering the Best Sports Bras for Runners: The SugarShock Story

How did SugarSports come to design the world’s greatest bras for running? It all started with Trish Hawkins, SugarSports founder and inventor of the SugarShock® sports bra. Trish is a 34DD triathlon athlete, so you might say that this quest to find the perfect sports bra was personal. She was never able to get the control she needed for her competitions, due to her bust size. Instead of settling for a sports bra that didn’t meet her needs, she set out to design her own!

In the early days, there were many mistakes, as she learned through trial and error. Testing her creations during her training runs, she tried to add compression, modify shoulder straps, add cups and tighten the rib cage band. They all failed to stop breast motion. Undeterred, she learned how the female body and breast tissue is constructed, studying anatomical drawings and medical diagrams.

During this time, Trish was working at an engineering company that designed steel structures. She wondered what her company would do to solve this motion problem, and it occurred to her — a shock absorber! She changed the design of her bra to include a specifically sewn shock band, had it custom made and went for a run. It worked! That confirmed the difference between a support bra and one that could absorb and displace the energy from breast motion.

When the news of her custom SugarShock control bra spread, other female athletes wanted to try it. This is how SugarSports came to be. The company’s mission is to bring Trish’s innovative sports bra to the attention of all women, so that they can enjoy maximum comfort and support while reaching for their highest level of personal achievement.
